On June 17, the Big Reveal was publicly shared. According to Dr. Lance Collins, Executive Director of the VT Innovation Campus, NCWI’s Dr. Gladys West Traveling exhibit will be designed by Virginia Tech students and faculty. Its first stop will be January 2025 at the Alexandrian-based Virginia Tech Innovation Campus. After six months, the exhibit will move on.   Submit your interest/support for the exhibit’s visit to your community.   exhibits@womensinnovations.org

Leaders during announcement express enthusiasm for the National Center of Women’s Innovations efforts and upcoming Dr. Glady West exhibit launch.

Dr. Gladys West, a Black mathematician, made a monumental contribution to the world through her precise mapping of the globe, which enabled the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS). Despite the far-reaching impact of her work, Dr. West is under-recognized. This exhibit intends to expand their recognition,  showcasing both her groundbreaking scientific contributions and her perseverance in overcoming major challenges.

Jane Plitt, Founder and Board Chair of NCWI, expressed her admiration for Dr. West: “Dr. West’s achievement is stupendous, but overcoming both the racial and gender challenges she faced in her life makes her story even more inspiring. Everyone needs to say ‘Thanks, Gladys’ for getting it right and doing your job so well. Thanks to VT for its graciousness in designing and then unveiling this exhibit simultaneously with opening its Alexandria Center.”

The public will be welcome to visit and interact with the exhibit, offering a unique opportunity to learn about the legacy of Dr. Gladys West and her pivotal role in enabling GPS. NCWI plans to generate similar traveling exhibits around other featured women innovators.
